We reached out to Peter Barsoom, the co-founder and CEO of 1906, based in Colorado, to find out more about the creation and story behind these ‘rapid-delivery’ edibles.
What is particularly special about the ingredients used in 1906 chocolates?
1906’s proprietary formulations are designed to deliver specific psychological and physiological experiences that enhance a consumer’s everyday activities. The ingredients are a combination of cacao, cannabis, and ethnobotanical ingredients designed to appeal to responsible, informed, health conscious adults. Each formulation has its own unique ingredient list. For example, High Love is for sensuality. Each premium, cannabis-infused “gem” is studded with a lustful blend of all-natural, romantic stimulants from around the world. Key botanical ingredients include Catuaba and Muira Puama (the Viagra of the Amazon), and Damiana (an ancient Aztec favorite).
For those who are not so familiar with the effects of edibles, why is it important to ‘start low, go slow’?
We design products that are formulated to fit in with the lifestyle of mainstream audiences. At 5 milligrams, each piece is roughly equivalent to a glass of wine. We know many adults don’t have six hours in a day for a date with edible. 1906 delivers a rapid, consistent experience each time.
What is a ‘Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer’? Sounds very high-tech!
It is an analytical instrument designed to provide precise measurements of dosage. The LCMS is used to ensure consistency of dosage.
What was the inspiration behind your chocolates’ ‘gems’ design?
1906 combines the best of nature and science in each formulation. Gems are a manifestation of 1906’s mission as they are found in nature and precisely sculpted naturally to give their beautiful shape.
Can you tell us a bit more about the different experiences that 1906 currently offers?
We now offer six! We are proud to announce the recent release of our truly unique chocolate covered coffee beans using the High Love and GO formulas. The main experiences are:

In your opinion, what kind of individual is your ideal consumer?
Our ideal consumer is the health conscious adult who wants to incorporate cannabis into their daily life in a non-intrusive “oops I got too high” kind of way. We also appeal to consumers with high expectations for taste, consistency and experience. As national opinion (and legal status) of cannabis moves forward daily, we know there are more and more of these types of consumers looking for something great.
We love the clean & modern design of your packaging – what is the main thing you wanted to communicate with your branding?
We wanted to communicate the mission of 1906 and highlight the failed century of prohibition — hence the tagline “It took more than a century for the world to return to its senses”.
The modern cannabis market is evolving daily, how do you see 1906 expanding beyond just an edibles company?
Currently, our vision is to keep offering consistent, high quality products that consumers love and trust. In addition to our line of chocolate products we will be launching all of the experiences in a pill and mint form.
What is the biggest challenge that edibles companies are currently facing?
The biggest challenge is educating consumers of the beneficial role that cannabis and other plant medicines can play as an alternative to pharmaceuticals, alcohol and other substances.
Finally, are you working on any new formulas that you can share?
As I said, we just released a new product, which is our premium chocolate covered coffee beans using the High Love formulation. We are working on some other very exciting additions to our product line but you’ll have to wait and see!
