What would the world be like without pain?
I think health is something we all take for granted until it’s failing. According to a study published by the Mayo Clinic, lower back pain is one of the top reasons people go to the doctor in the US and it affects 29 percent of adult Americans. It’s also the main reason for people – across the world – missing work and in the US alone, over $10 billion is spent on an annual basis on treating back bain and lost productivity related to back pain. So from a practical standpoint, the world would be a lot more productive without pain. From an emotional standpoint, pain can be depressing and debillitating. It can keep you from the things and people you love the most. What’s so exciting about Sagely Naturals and cannabis in general is that it can be an effective way to alleviate all types of pain in a natural, non-toxic way. That’s why our mission at Sagely is to get people back to doing what they love most!
Where do you carry most of your stress?
I’ve certainly experienced stress throughout my life but I know until I turned 30, I never even thought about stress related pain! And like clockwork, the year of my 30th birthday, I started experiencing pretty chronic lower back pain, which is where I carry most of my stress. My mom has actually had to have back surgery, so I’m hyper aware of the problem and I’m trying hard to take care of it proactively. My business partner, Kaley, and I actually started Sagely Naturals because of our moms and the pain that they were in. They each ahd really stressful careers and I’m sure that part of the pain they experience is a physical manifestation of the stresses they carried for so long. Now we always start our product R&D with ourselves and our moms; if the products aren’t significantly helping our pain or stress levels, they still need a lot of work! I actually walk around carrying a travel sized bottle of our first product, the Relief & Recovery Cream. I’ll apply it to my lower back or my neck throughout the day when it’s hurting or when I’m feeling stressed and I find that it makes a huge difference in being able to just loosen up.
What can nature teach us about stress relief?
Nature is one of the best stress relievers out there! Being in nature not only makes you feel more emotionally healthy, there is also evidence that it can make you feel physically better too by lowering your heart rate and blood pressure and even reducing your stress hormones. There have been experiments conducted where people can even get some of these benefits just by looking at images of nature! I just recently read about this amazing Japanese practice called forest bathing. It’s a pretty simple concept—you just surround yourself with trees! Like the former experiments, when they studied the effects of forest bathing, they noticed that even just being around trees can calm your nervous system. You don’t need a lot of time in nature to get these benefits so it’s worth making time everyday to just go outside and pause for a second!
Can you name 3 healthy ways people can relieve stress?
1 – Mindfulness—being in the present moment. This doesn’t have to be actually sitting down to meditate, you can do certain things you already do everyday mindfully. I personally use cooking as my time to be mindful—chopping veggies seems to be the best way for me to stop thinking about my to do list and to just be in the moment.
2 – Talking to someone. You don’t necessarily have to see a therapist to get the benefits of talk therapy. Talking to a friend or someone you trust can always put things in perspective and leave you feeling like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
3 – CBD—CBD stands for cannabidiol, and is one of the many cannabinoids (or compounds) that come from the cannabis plant. CBD, as it builds up in our systems, helps to bolster our central nervous system and can reduce the feelings of fight or flight that can cause us to feel elevated stress levels.CBD in itself is not psychoactive, so you if you want to feel high, you can choose a product with THC. If you don’t want the high, you can choose something like Sagely Naturals, since we don’t use any THC in our products. Either way, it can be a healthy way to reduce stress!
