This month we are catching up with and celebrating the work of all our wonderful collaborators for our upcoming L.A. Getaway series.
First up, is a closer look into the colorful world of stylist Jenny Wichman, creator of Yew Yew. Jenny will be speaking at our Friends in High Places networking event, and giving us some insight into her prop styling and photography techniques. We had a chat about the upcoming launch of Yew Yew, where she gets her inspiration and some business advice for the canna curious…
Where did the idea for Yew Yew begin?
About a year ago I got really fed up looking at my own smoke kit. It had the typical glass blown pipe coated with resin, dirty ziplock baggie and bobby pins. I was ashamed to bring it around with me or leave it out on my desk when I had people over. That’s when I started sketching some ideas for smoking essentials that would fit into my lifestyle.
How would you describe your design style?
Minimal with a strong focus on color.
Where do you find inspiration in your home town?
I live in Rockaway Beach, Queens and I am constantly inspired by the beach sunsets and the gorgeous gardens in my neighborhood. That’s where we shot almost all the images you see on Instagram.
What are some of your favorite projects that you’ve worked on?
I’m a prop stylist and I really love to do still life and table top styling. It’s great to bring in a bunch of random objects in and play with composition off the cuff. But honestly designing these pipes and working on building a brand around Yew Yew has been my favorite project to date.
Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?
Probably more of a hunter. I’m always looking for the next opportunity but also less detail oriented. I’m always just charging ahead.
Describe your favorite smoking ritual.
I love to smoke a little, drink some coffee and get shit done. Haha! I’m a very highly functioning smoker.
We’re excited to have you speak at our event! What are some of your favorite places to visit in LA?
I’m not super familiar with LA so I’m just planning on enjoying the lack of mosquitos and no humidity.
If you could ask anyone for business advice; fictional, living or dead, who would it be?
Oprah!! She is my idol. I went through a phase of reading A LOT of Oprah quotes and watching interviews when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Here is one of my favs “Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe.” It’s cheesy but so true.

What kind of things can we expect from Yew Yew in the next few months?
Well I’m launching the website in the mid-August and planning a few events. I’m just excited to get Yew Yew going and see what happens. Hopefully some fun collaborations!
What’s your piece of advice for anyone thinking of getting started in the cannabis industry?
I would say if you’re really passionate about cannabis you should fully make the transition into the industry. It’s an exciting time to get involved because it’s blowing up. Take whatever you have experience in (writing, graphic design, sales etc) and translate that to the cannabis world. Just start small and see what it turns into.
